Health Justice Partnership at Mater
Often complex legal and social issues can form part of the environmental causes of ill-health in patients. The Mater clinic uses a combination of medical, social work and legal skills to address the issues confronting patients.
What we do to help
The clinic can help clients with civil law matters, including:
- advanced care plans;
- guardianship and administration;
- mental health law;
- discrimination; and
- other civil law issues.
A team comprising of law students, social work students, medical students and a supervising lawyer assist in addressing the legal and social challenges facing the client.
Who is eligible
- Patients of Mater Hospital, South Brisbane who cannot afford a lawyer or get legal aid.
How to get help
The Health Advocacy Legal Clinic operates during university semesters on a Monday and Wednesday. Patients are referred by hospital social workers, nurses and clinicians to the clinic.
