Collecting your personal information

We collect your personal information so that we can provide you with services, and also perform our other functions and activities. This may include assessing your eligibility for pro bono assistance, providing legal advice or giving updates about our activities and events.

The type of personal information we collect will depend on how you interact with us. You may provide us with information in a number of ways, such as through our legal clinics, our Self Representation Service, our Pro Bono Referral Services or our website.

We prefer to collect your personal information directly from you through an Application Form, phone conversations or other correspondence. However, sometimes we will get your personal information in other ways, such as from publicly available sources or from a support worker or someone else you have authorised to talk about your matter.

You have the option to interact with us anonymously or using a name other than your own (a “pseudonym”). However, we may not be able to provide you with all our services, such as providing legal assistance, if we do not have enough information.

Using and disclosing your personal information

We use and disclose your personal information as part of performing our services and activities, such as to firms or barristers acting on matters or organisations such as Legal Aid Queensland so that we can find the best organisation to help you. We may also disclose your personal information if you have expressly or impliedly consented to that use or disclosure, or if it is required under Australian law.

Where necessary, we use and disclose your information in confidence. We also de-identify the personal information of our applicants and clients where possible. For example, your information is de-identified in our requests to firms and barristers for assistance, as well as in any external publications or reports by LawRight.

Storing and securing your personal information

Your personal information is treated as highly confidential and is stored electronically or in hard copy files. We use third party service providers to store and process some personal information.

We are required by law to keep your personal information for 7 years after you cease your relationship with us. After this time, we securely destroy or de-identify your personal information.

We take all reasonable steps to ensure that your personal information is protected from misuse, interference and loss, and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.

Your right to access your personal information

You have a right to request access to your personal information. You are also able to have your personal information corrected, and to unsubscribe from our mailing list or from any of our services. All requests should be directed to admin@lawright.org.au.

If you have applied to us as a volunteer or employee, you also have a right to ask us not to retain the personal information we collected from you in your application, or that obtained from third parties, such as previous employers and nominated referees.
