Position vacant – State Courts Paralegal

LawRight is a not-for-profit, community legal centre. We work with our member firms and barrister to deliver strategic pro bono work. We are currently seeking a 4 day a week Paralegal for the State Courts office of our Court and Tribunal Services. This role would suit someone in their penultimate or final year of a Bachelor of Laws, who is interested in improving access to justice, working with like-minded colleagues, building their networks and gaining valuable experience as they support us to deliver free legal help.

You will help deliver assistance to self-represented litigants in Queensland’s District Court, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. Your work will include:

  • Reception and administrative duties
  • Answering the phone and responding to general enquiries
  • Assisting CTS solicitors to organise volunteer support, including liaising with partner law firms and
    preparing rosters for volunteer solicitors and barristers.
  • Assisting with legal research and the drafting of correspondence and briefs to volunteer solicitors
    and barristers as requested.

Location & hours

The role is based in Brisbane. Our office hours are 9 to 5. The role is for 4 days a week and we are flexible about which weekdays are to be worked, with a preference to include Tuesday and Wednesday.

Volunteer Callout – student volunteer positions

LawRight is a not-for-profit, community legal centre and along with our pro bono lawyers, we have a proud history of support from student volunteers. These roles would suit people who are interested in improving access to justice, working with like-minded colleagues, building their networks and gaining valuable experience as they support us to deliver free legal help, and undertake some of the fundraising events that underpin our work.

LawRight is currently seeking:

  • Comms and events volunteers
  • Admin and phone volunteers

Necessary experience

The roles would suit students who are studying the following.

  • Comms volunteers
    • Studying degree in communications, journalism or similar and/or law.
    • Undertaking law degree is helpful but not necessary.
  • Phone & admin volunteers
    • Studying degree in law, justice, social work or other relevant subject.
    • Undertaking law degree is helpful but not necessary.

Experience to be gained

You would receive training to work in:

  • Comms volunteers
    • Social media
    • Event planning (for Queensland Legal Walk and other LawRight events)
    • Stakeholder engagement
  • Phone & admin volunteers
    • Legal office administration
    • Answering the phone
    • Supporting client intake

Commitment

We are seeking volunteers who can commit to:

  • One day or a half-day per week for one semester; or
  • A block of time during university holidays.

Location & hours

The roles are based at LawRight’s main office in Spring Hill, which is accessible by public transport. Our office hours are 9 to 5. We support full-day or half-day placements. The comms role has some capacity to include work from home while the admin roles would be completely in the office.

We are keen for volunteers to start as soon as possible and will fill as many roles as possible in the first round. We will then undertake a second round of volunteer intake before the university semester starts.
